The Proverbs 31 Woman

Updated: Sep 23

When you hear the phrase Proverbs 31 Woman, what comes to mind? For many of us, it feels like a standard we can’t live up to—another measuring stick that reminds us how far we fall short. But what if we’ve misunderstood her story? What if she isn’t meant to be a burden, but an inspiration?

A Mother’s Wisdom

Proverbs 31 appears at the very end of the book of Proverbs. And here’s the surprising part: it wasn’t written by a man giving advice to women. It was written by a mother giving advice to her son, King Lemuel.

She told him plainly: Don’t waste your time chasing charm or beauty alone. Look for character. Look for wisdom. Look for faith.

That’s timeless motherly wisdom, isn’t it? Thousands of years later, we can still picture a mom pulling her son aside, wanting the very best for him.

A Woman Who Stood Out

This woman wasn’t ordinary. She wasn’t sitting in the background waiting for life to happen to her. Scripture describes her as decisive, hardworking, and entrepreneurial:

“She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.” (Proverbs 31:16)

She was running real estate deals, investing in vineyards, producing and selling textiles. If she lived today, she’d probably have a thriving Etsy shop, manage a side hustle on Instagram, and still make sure her family was fed and cared for. She was the original entrepreneur—wise with her time, her energy, and her resources.

More Than Just Business

Her influence wasn’t limited to her finances. She extended her hand to the poor and the needy, using her blessings to bless others. At home, she made sure her family was cared for. Her husband was respected in the community because she supported him.

Behind the picture of success was a woman who understood that wealth and influence are meant to be shared, not hoarded.

Strength of Character

One verse captures her heart so beautifully:

“She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.” (Proverbs 31:26)

She wasn’t admired just for what she did—she was respected for what she said. Her wisdom and faith gave her words weight. Her children honored her, her husband praised her, and her community valued her.

She wasn’t frantic, frantic, or scattered. She was steady because she knew where her strength came from.

The Secret Behind It All

Toward the end of the passage, we find the key that ties everything together:

“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” (Proverbs 31:30)

That’s the secret. Not perfection. Not outward beauty. Not endless talent or success. What made her unforgettable was her fear of the Lord—her deep love, reverence, and devotion to God. Everything else flowed from that.

What It Means for Us Today

Most of us aren’t buying fields or weaving our own textiles, and that’s okay. The Proverbs 31 Woman isn’t meant to be copied action-for-action. Instead, she’s a picture of what it looks like when a woman builds her life around God.

For some of us, that looks like creating a peaceful home. For others, it might mean leading in business, teaching, serving, or ministering. It’s not about what you do—it’s about who you do it for.

Final Thought

The Proverbs 31 Woman isn’t here to make us feel guilty. She’s here to remind us of what’s possible when faith becomes the foundation of our lives.

Charm may be deceptive. Beauty will fade. But faith? Faith lasts.

And that’s what makes a woman truly unforgettable.

This space was made for the woman who once walked closely with God… and wandered. Meeting Him all over again—with less guilt, more grace, and a real hunger to get it right this time. Or maybe you have questions about what it looks like to live your life according to God's design.

Not polished. Sometimes it’s messy. But it’s honest. And you’re not alone anymore.
